When Varicose Veins Cause Swelling, EVLT Has Been Proven To Help Substantially
The National Institutes of Health recently published a study that tracked how effective endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) was for patients who suffered from symptoms of leg swelling due to varicose veins. Swelling is one of the most common complaints we hear from patients who are seeking treatment for varicose veins. It’s not uncommon for the swelling to become problematic enough that it interferes with daily activities.
Endovenous laser treatment, or EVLT, is one of the main treatments for swelling from varicose veins. In the study, patients were surveyed from January, 2005, to March, 2015, about the degree of swelling, their use of compression stockings, and how satisfied they were with the EVLT procedure. All patients had what’s referred to as incompetent saphenous veins which is one of the most common causes of varicose veins.
Varicose veins most commonly affect the greater saphenous vein, which is the longest blood vessel in the body running from the ankle to the groin near the inside surface of the leg. 80% of people with varicose veins have them in the greater saphenous vein, while 20% have a problem with the small saphenous vein, and 15% have them in the anterior accessory saphenous vein. Many patients will have venous failure in some combination of the saphenous veins as well as in their tributaries.
The study evaluated how effective EVLT was for treating any of the incompetent saphenous veins. During an endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), a laser catheter is inserted into the diseased vein through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee. Targeted laser energy then shrinks the walls of the vein, closing the faulty vein so that blood cannot flow through it. Blood naturally diverts to flow through other healthy veins in the leg.
A total of 1,634 limbs were treated by EVLT in the study. The results showed a significantly strong clinical response, with 76% reporting reduced or resolved swelling. This holds out high hope for those who suffer with swelling from varicose veins.
