How Varicose Vein Treatment Transformed the Lives of 3 Patients

We regularly hear from our patients that they had no idea their painful symptoms caused by varicose veins could be treated so easily. Despite the fact that treatment has come a long way in the past couple of decades, patients often know very little about their leg pain and varicose veins in general. Some may have seen older family members suffer symptoms for years, and assumed there was no treatment. Man struggles with restless leg syndrome due to varicose veins

Fortunately, that just isn’t true. Many of our patients have had their painful symptoms alleviated with simple, non-invasive procedures that in most cases are covered by their insurance.

Discovering the Dangers of Untreated Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

For example, 32-year-old Julie Doss went through three full pregnancies with varicose veins before coming to East Tennessee Vein Clinic for help. During her first pregnancy, the veins were noticeable, but didn’t cause pain. By her third pregnancy, however, the pain she experienced one evening was enough to finally convince her to seek treatment. During her evaluation, Dr. Douglass discovered through ultrasound that she had a blood clot within superficial varicose veins in her leg.

The blood clot alone was a surprise for Julie. She was unaware of the alarming complications that can occur with varicose veins, which can include not only blood clots, but deep vein thrombosis, skin ulcers, and bleeding veins. Thankfully, the second surprise was more welcome — treatment that was simple and effective.

“I was shocked at how little pain I experienced during the procedures, and I am so happy with the end results!” she said. “My bulging, aching veins are gone and I feel so much better. I'm so glad I didn't wait any longer.”

Conquering Restless Leg Syndrome With Varicose Vein Treatment

Our own Director of Operations Cindy Arnold waited seven years before seeking treatment. She worked long hours at a desk and knew she was having trouble with circulation, but she didn’t think it was varicose veins. When she did finally seek help, ultrasound diagnostics showed that she had one failing varicose vein.

After just one injection of foam sclerotherapy, she began to see improvements. One of her most frustrating symptoms was restless leg syndrome, which many of our patients experience. After treatment, her seven-year struggle finally came to an end.

“Why did I put up with the restless leg symptoms for almost seven years when one simple injection could have possibly alleviated my symptoms?” she said of her experience.

What One Man Learned After Only Having One Treatment

Despite the fact that one treatment can provide immediate relief, it’s important to complete your treatment plan. A 70-year-old patient discovered the truth of this when he came to us 10 years after his initial procedure. East Tennessee Vein Clinic recommended that he follow up his initial procedure with sclerotherapy, which would have cleaned up any hidden varicose veins. However, he felt so much better after his initial procedure that he did not go through with the sclerotherapy.

Unfortunately, because he didn’t follow up with sclerotherapy, he later experienced a recurrence in varicose vein symptoms due to venous disease in the network of veins running the length of his right leg calf. After we treated him for the second time, he is now happily enjoying a symptom-free life.

At East Tennessee Vein Clinic, we help all kinds of people deal with leg pain, restless leg syndrome, and visible varicose veins. As the patients described above can testify, our procedures are quick and non-invasive, and are even often covered by insurance.

Varicose veins may be chronic and progressive, but treatment is simple and non-invasive. It’s important to seek treatment sooner than later if you think your symptoms may be related to venous disease.
