EVLT—Endovenous Laser Treatment
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is a no surgery, no scarring way to treat varicose veins. EVLT is a tremendously safe, effective procedure, and 97% of first-time EVLT treatments are successful! East Tennessee Vein Clinic is one of the most experienced practices in performing varicose vein treatments, including EVLT, in Knoxville and East Tennessee.
A laser catheter is placed inside the varicose vein and then targeted laser energy seals the diseased vein shut. The laser energy damages the vein walls, shrinking them and closing the faulty vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This eliminates vein bulging at its source. Your body will naturally divert the blood in the faulty veins to the other healthy veins in your leg.
“With EVLT, there is no scarring. I am very pleased with the results.”
Demetra H., EVLT patient
EVLT is an in-office procedure that’s performed by our team in less than an hour. No general anesthesia or hospitalization is required, only a local anesthetic is needed. A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.
Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged, and you’ll be advised to wear compression stockings for a week or more. Normal daily activity can be resumed immediately although it’s advised to avoid rigorous activities, such as gym workouts, for the time period recommended after your procedure. Any minor soreness or bruising can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
“During the EVLT procedure, I really did feel no pain at all. After the procedure I dressed myself and went back to work.” Sal S., EVLT patient
Some patients will not see a great difference in the appearance of their varicose veins immediately after EVLT because there are still varicose veins that are too narrow or twisted for an endovenous catheter to pass through. These will be treated later with microphlebectomy and/or ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. After your EVLT procedure you will be scheduled to return to make certain that the vein treated with laser is closed and to plan the next phase of your treatment in order to eliminate all sources of your vein disease.
